Bio:
I am a Hispanic artist, born and raised in Dallas TX. I didn’t become involved with art until I reached high school, and was enrolled in an art class. I instantly fell in love and proceeded to take art all four years of high school at Moises E. Molina. In each of those four years, I participated in the art competition V.A.S.E and qualified for state. After graduation, I attended Mountain View College where I continued to take art classes and expand my knowledge of the art world. I am currently a student at the University of North Texas (Denton) and majoring in art education.
What are you currently working on?
I hadn’t been making much art before I was asked to participate in this live event. Mostly I’ve been working on my school assignments. I have some unfinished collaborative pieces with the last two live participants, Rodney and Yeltsin, that need to get done. In relation to my own work, the few personal pieces I’ve done recently have focused on experimenting with mixed media.
How is your studio space set up?
My studio space is my bedroom, a corner of my room is dedicated to holding my art materials/supplies and the other has my bench/easel hybrid. When I use it I first have to toss aside all the clutter that piles up on top of it. Sometimes when no one is around I might migrate to the living room to have more space.
Who are your current favorite artists/artists that influence you?
- Loribelle Spirovski, her work is gorgeous and I aspire to have her skill some day.
- Sage Barnes, his process and openness to trying new things is inspiring.
- David Shrigley, his work makes me laugh.
- Emma Mierop (Jennifer shows masks and scented tokens by this artist)
How do you feel your art has been impacted during quarantine?
As mentioned, I haven’t been making much art but in the occasions where I have, it has been very therapeutic. I feel like I have a lot more time now and I’ve been influenced to try expanding my mixed media cataloged during quarantine.
What are you looking forward to this semester?
It’s my first semester at UNT and I am mainly excited about the classes. I’m getting some really weird projects, I love to tell people about them.
Them: “I saw that you were doing something the other day, what was it?”
Me: “which time? The time I had to make a nonobjective representational piece based on my experience on a walk or when I had to lick soap?”
